On LabXchange, any registered educator account holder can create classes, using them as spaces to store resources and share them with up to 300 students at a time. Classes allow an educator to monitor each individual student’s progress through resources and in the class as a whole. Think of it as a simplified learning management system (LMS).
To create a class, you need to have a registered educator account. Ensure that you are logged in before continuing with this module. Follow these steps to create your first class on LabXchange.
Navigate to your dashboard and select the Classes I teach section
Click the Create class button to start the process. You will need to fill in all fields marked by an asterisk (*).
Click on Class name and enter a name for your class.
You can select any of the options under the drop-down menus for Subjects and Maximum number of learners. This number can be updated at any time, so you are not permanently limited to the number that you choose right now.
Click Description and enter a description of your class.
With all of the required fields filled in, scroll to the bottom of the page and tick I agree to the LabXchange Terms of service and Privacy Notice.
Finally, click Create class. The class will now be saved to your dashboard under Classes I teach.
To add content to a class, navigate to your Dashboard (My content) and select Classes I teach.
Click on the class that you just created to access the class editor.
Under the Content section, click on +Add content. This will open a pop-up window in which you can search for resources, choosing from the public LabXchange library (Library), your private content (Your Content), or your favorite content (Favorites).
Under any of these tabs, click on Filter to bring up more search options on the left.
Once you have identified a resource that you want to add, click the + in a circle to add it to your list, then click Add items to add it to your class.
You can continue to add as many resources as you wish.
Your selections will be added to the Content section as Unposted Content, which will not be visible to members of the class. To post any piece of content for the class to see, click the + in a circle. You can un-post a resource using the 3-dot (“...”) menu on the right of the content. This way, you can prepare content in advance but control the pace of the class by releasing resources as necessary.
