Introduction to Labxchange: Module three

Library

About the Library

The LabXchange content library is packed with over 30,000 resources, including videos, simulations, teaching guides, and more. You can easily search for topics, filter results, and favorite resources to save them to your Dashboard.

LabXchange is designed to give you everything you need to guide students in biology, chemistry, physics, and related subjects, like data science and global health. Learn more about the available subject areas, content types, content sources, and curricula.

Searching the Library

The LabXchange public library is available for anyone to use. It contains videos, question sets, interactive resources, simulated laboratory experiments, teaching guides or lesson plans, textbook chapters, and much more.

The library allows you to search for specific topics and filter the results that you see. Below is a short video demonstrating how to access and search the library.

This video is a visual walkthrough of the steps outlined in the text.

Adding content to your private library

You can add a variety of personal resources to your private library under the My content button on your Dashboard. Content saved in this way is not added to the public library, but you can share it with other registered users by giving them the web address (URL) directly.

To add your own resources, follow the steps below and select the content type that you want to create from the links that follow. Here is an example of how to create a Text article:

Add content to your dashboard

  1. Navigate to your Dashboard by clicking on My content.

  2. Click Create content.

  3. Select the type of content you would like to upload or create (for example, a text article or a video).

  4. Follow the instructions relating to each content type from our Help Center:

Annotated video (beta)

Annotation turns the passive act of watching a video into an engaging, interactive experience. By layering formative feedback questions, explanatory text, and simulations throughout a video, annotation takes video from an outdated broadcast model to a multidimensional learning tool.

Question Set

Question sets are groups of assessment questions, which you may think of as assignments or problem banks. They help test understanding and retention of learning content. You need to log into your LabXchange account to access question sets.

Sharing content

Content on LabXchange can be either public or private

Public content

Public content is fully visible in the LabXchange library and can be found through an internet search. Public content in our library can be shared with anyone on the Internet, regardless of whether or not they have a LabXchange account.

If you find a text article, simulation, or any other resource that you would like to show to friends, colleagues, students, or classmates, click the button to the right of the Favorites button on the resource home screen and then select Share from the drop-down menu that appears.

This will provide you with options to share the resource on Facebook, X/Twitter, Pinterest, or Google Classroom. You can also copy the web address (URL) to your clipboard in order to share the resource via email or text message.

Private content

Registered LabXchange users can create their own content, which is then saved to their Dashboard. This content can be shared, but only with other registered LabXchange users. It will not appear in a library search, regardless of whether or not the user is logged in.

In order to share private content, go to your Dashboard and select the My content button, then click on a piece of content that you have previously saved. Once the content has loaded, copy the URL from your browser's address bar. You can then send this link to another user via LabXchange’s messaging system or send it to them via email. You can also post it to the community forums for feedback from other users.

When it comes to sharing multiple pieces of content, it may be easier to first create a pathway or even a class to share everything at once. Pathways allow you to share a mix of private and public content in any order that you choose, while classes allow content (including pathways) to be easily added and removed. As such, a pathway is often helpful for sharing resources surrounding a specific theme, while a class may be a better option for sharing varied resources with the same group of users. We’ll discuss pathways in more detail in the next module.

Now that you have created your account, try searching the public library for content and adding it to your Dashboard!
